An old nuclear blast shelter is cheaper than you’d think.

Anton Self, the chief executive of the tech company Bastionhost, has inked a deal to buy one of the so-called Diefenbunkers. He won’t reveal the exact cost, but said this week that the labyrinthine facility north of Halifax will ring in at “six figures.”

For that they get 64,000 square feet (6,000 square metres) on two chilly levels, with its many nooks and crannies protected by heavy concrete doors and air filters.

Mr. Self, who comes across more as Peter Sellers than a Bond villain, takes an evident pleasure showing off the bunker’s quirky features. He points out the decontamination showers and the air-lock hatches. In the command centre, he flicks a switch to illuminate the warning board, which has a scale of one to five for the level of NORAD threat.
