For years, the information technology sector has been focused on one goal: Delivering fast and reliable technology. Now it’s caught between the demands of a new breed of electronics and the need to reduce energy consumption. When the electricity tab was covered by other department budgets, IT was sheltered from the harsh reality of power bills. But those days have come to an end.

“Most chief information officers don’t even consider electricity, so they don’t know that energy reduction should be on their radar. But many companies are asking IT to pay for its consumption and are building the reduction of energy consumption into compensation packages,” says Jose Iglesias, vice-president of global solutions for Symantec.

Why has the IT sector been slow to notice it was an energy hog? Chris Pratt, an IBM Canada sales executive in strategic initiatives, believes part of the problem is that IT waste is hidden.
