IT managers are constantly walking a tightrope between growing customer demand for IT services and the enterprise imperative of controlling costs. Yet the winds of economic uncertainty are howling at unprecedented levels. IT managers will face tough choices in the coming year—where to spend precious investment dollars and where to cut. Although recessionary fears were in the back of every executive’s mind over the summer, this fall’s financial shocks have put cost control front and center on the IT agenda. At this year’s Gartner Symposium/ITxpo, its analysts felt that one of the most contentious issues for IT departments over the next two years will be how to more rapidly modernize infrastructure and operations while simultaneously reducing costs.
